Bobby was one of my best friends during our early childhood years. There are so many stories of our kid adventures that it’s hard to pick just one, but he reminded me in a Messenger post earlier this year about a real adventure my big brother Chris took us on; I think it was sometime around 1962. Chris took us to Pigeon Forge and we went to a dolphin show! I think it was semi-outdoors with two large water tanks, one for the show, the other for training? I remember we sat on bleachers and watched the show. Then at the end of the show they asked if anyone wanted to swim with dolphins and before we knew it, my brother had volunteered us! We stripped down to our blue jeans and they put us into the training tank, one dolphin for each of us. They had us hold on to the dorsal fin (I’m not sure if they asked if we could swim or not) and just before they gave the signal to the dolphins to dive, they asked us if we knew what dolphins did with their snouts. We said “No.” and they said “They kill sharks with them!” The trainer gave the signal and the dolphins pulled us 15’ under and once around the tank! And that’s the story of how two Newport boys who had never seen the ocean, swam with dolphins in the middle of the Smoky Mountains!
Sorry old friend that I lost touch with you and never got a chance to “Party at the Farm”, but at our next adventure together it will be Jesus taking us and I’m sure it will be just as fun as swimming with dolphins!
Watch the skies!
