A Memorial Service celebrating the life of Ernest Lloyd Smith will be held Saturday, November 1, 2014 at the Del Rio First Church of God, located at 1049 Blue Mill Road. He was born September 10, 1931 and passed away September 27, 2014 at his home in Del Rio.Surviving him are his wife of 63 years, Evelyn Clark Smith; daughter, Deborah Lynne Smith Shell and husband Don Shell of Knoxville, TN; sons, David Lloyd Smith and wife , Karen Marie Edwards Smith of Gray, TN, and Darryl Wayne Smith and wife, Kim Cook Smith of Farragut, TN; grandsons, Garrett Lloyd Shell and Gabriel Paul Shell of Knoxville, TN and Devin Arthur Smith and wife Leah of Louisville, KY, Adam Cook of Knoxville, TN ; granddaughters, Megan Paige Smith Roop and husband Ricky Roop of Gray, TN, Amanda Atchley and husband Paul Atchley of Knoxville, TN, Taylor Cook of Knoxville, TN; great-grandchildren, Titus, Lily, and Hudson Smith of Louisville, KY and Charlotte Ann-Marie Roop of Gray, TN, Morgan and Katie Atchley of Knoxville, TN.Preceding him in death were his parents, Arthur Edwin Smith (1908-1990) and Frances Leone Smith (1907-1998); sister Marie Smith Clark Ellison; brothers-in-law, John (Jack) Martin Clark and Glen Ellison; grandparents, James Arthur (Art) Smith and Mary Caroline Bible Smith, of Del Rio, TN and John Franklin Smith and wife Lora Crane Smith of Bryson City, NC.He served in the U.S. Air Force 1951-1955, stationed at Burtonwood Air Force Base in Warrington, Lancashire, England during the Korean War Era.He worked on several construction jobs as a welder and pipe fitter including Swan's Bridge at Dandridge, Tennessee, the Teddy Roosevelt Bridge connecting Virginia and Washington, D.C., the Subway Tunnel between the Senate Office Building and the Capitol, and Interstate 40 from Hartford, Tennessee to the North Carolina line. He was owner of Lloyd Smith Welding Service and was an industrial contractor for Newport Industrial Products for several years and Stokely Brothers Canning Factory in Newport.In 1975 he helped organize the Del Rio Community Association and establish the Del Rio Community Center, Library and Fire Department. He served as the first Fire Chief. One of his interests was making fruit cakes and lemon meringue pies to share with his friends. He was very proud to be "cook of the week" for the Newport Plain Talk when Nancy Petry was Woman Editor. He enjoyed fishing trips in Canada and Alaska and hunting in the Midwest and especially the camaraderie of friends. He was a great "story teller". Most important to him was spending time with his Family. He dearly loved his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren and was very proud of them.The Memorial Service will be 2:00pm with Rev. Gerald Clark officiating. The Burial Service and Military Honors will be at the Clark Cemetery at Deep Gap. Brown Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
