Obituary
Mrs. Floy Marie Large Grooms, age 88, of Newport, passed away Tuesday morning, September 6, 2022.
She was a Christian lady that attended church anytime the doors were opened. She was attending Crossroad Tabernacle Church until her health declined several years ago. Flo loved to sing gospel music and had a beautiful voice. In earlier years, she and Gerald along with Junior and Lillie Grooms would sing and play at various churches and nursing homes. She loved gardening and flowers and will always be remembered for her laughter. She was employed at American Enka until it was closed and then she finished her working career at Dollywood.
She was preceded in death by her husband Gerald C Grooms; husband Junior P Grooms; son Garry L Grooms, Sr.; parents Scott Large and Unav Valentine Perryman; sister Dorothy (Raymond) Woods; brothers Charles (Louise) Large and David “Bud” (Patricia) Perryman.
Survivors include her grandsons Garry L (Carla) Grooms, Jr. and Jerry T (Melissa) Grooms all of Newport and Johnny M (Rebecca) Grooms of Woodbridge, VA; great-grandchildren Ashlee (Noah) Fisher, of Newport, Carolann (Denton) McMahan of Clarksville, TN, Colby Grooms of Newport, and Emily Grooms of Woodbridge, VA; great-great-grandson Theo Fisher of Newport; sisters Sandra (Tom) Allen of Newport and Margaret Latham of Gallatin, TN and brother James “ Buckwheat” Perryman of Newport. Additional survivors include several nieces including Joy Large, nephews, cousins and friends including Susie Odell of Newport. Flo loved her family dearly, just as they loved her and they were the joy of her life.
Per her request, she will be cremated.
A graveside inurnment service will be held at 10:00 a.m. Friday, September 9, 2022 at Union Cemetery with Pastor Randy Swann officiating. Family and friends will meet at 9:45 a.m. at the cemetery prior to the service.
The family would like to express a special thank you to the staff of Smoky Mountain Home Health and Hospice for taking such good care of Flo after her health declined. Also, to Kay Hawk for the love and extra special care given to her in the last few months.
In lieu of flowers, the family ask that donations be made to the Alzheimer’s Association or Susan G. Komen or the charity of your choice.
