Henry M. Bartlett's Obituary
Mr. Henry M. Bartlett Jr., age 81 of Newport passed away Monday January 13, 2014 at his home.
Born in Poughkeepsie, New York on December 21, 1932, Henry graduated from Florida Southern College in 1957. Henry's career began as a newspaper street vender in Flordia but in late 1959, Goodwill Industries of South Flordia opened its program of rehabilitation and was training to serve people with disabilities. Henry was the first to apply and was accepted into the program.
Henry's philanthropic career began in 1971 when he became a member of Goodwill Industries Board of Directors, where he became a frequent public speaker in advocating for understanding an opportunism for people with disabilities and also in promoting Goodwill Industries. In 1989, Henry retired from a very successful career at Ryder and relocated to Newport.
Upon his retirement Henry moved from participation on Goodwill's Board of Directors to the Board of Trustees, where he remained a member until his death. He was a member of First United Methodist Church and a member of The Gideons International and The Newport Kiwanis Club. Even though Henry was never a boy scout, he devoted forty years of service in the scouting movement, and was Assistent Scout Master of Troop 298.
Henry was preceded in death by his parents; Henry M. Bartlett Sr. and Florence C. Bartlett.
Suvivors include his sisters; Sarah Margret Reeves of Tuscaloosa, AL and Judith Gilbert Bartlett of New York City, NY. Additional suvivors include several special neices and nephews and special friends Natasha Sisk, Elena Obryon and Ray and Sylvia Snader.
The funeral service will be held 2:00 pm Saturday January 18, 2014 at First United Methodist Church with Pastor James Bennington and Pastor Marta Cogburn officiating. The family will receive friends from 12:00pm to 2:00pm at the church prior to the service with interment to follow in the Waters Large Cemetery.
