Mr. Roy T. Campbell, Jr.'s Obituary
Attorney Roy Timothy Campbell, Jr., age 91, of Newport, passed away Tuesday, May 28, 2019, at Jefferson Park of Dandridge, where he had resided for the past twenty months. Born August 8, 1927, he was the younger of two sons of Roy T. Campbell, Sr. and Polly Vance Brittain Campbell. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Albert Mayfield Campbell.
Campbell attended Newport Grammar School and graduated from Cocke County High School in 1945. He then entered the University of Tennessee. After a tour of military service, he returned to UTK, where he eventually received his law degree in 1951.
He actively practiced law in Newport for over sixty years. Additionally he represented this area in the Tennessee Legislature Senate, was a member of the Newport Lions Club for over sixty years, and was a devoted member of First United Methodist Church. He was also a member of the American Legion.
In the 1950's he, along with several other citizens, became actively involved in the recruitment of local industries.
He is survived by his devoted daughter, Sherry Campbell, of Newport.
Additional survivors include several beloved cousins: Sandra Denton (Scott) Duncan and family, Dr. Paul (Glenda) Denton and family, Dr. Susan (Joe) Gratz and family, and Neil (Angie) Denton and family; Mary Elizabeth (Wayne) Souder and family, Wade (Bethany) Davies and family; Betty Burns (Ed) Davies, Reynolds and Bob and their families; the family of Eleanor (Cover) Ennis of Western, North Carolina; several additional cousins of the metro-Atlanta area; his Campbell & Hooper family; the staff and residents of Franklin Cottage at Jefferson Park of Dandridge; and a host of lifelong friends.
The family expresses heartfelt thanks to the staff and residents of Franklin Cottage at Jefferson Park of Dandridge for their devoted care and love. It was exemplary.
Family and friends will be received at First Methodist Church of Newport on Sunday, June 2, 2019, from 2:00-5:00 p. m. with services following. The Rev. Dr. James Bennington will lead the service and eulogies will be given by Gordon Ball and Duay O'Neil.
Family and friends are asked to meet at Costner-Maloy at 9:15 a. m. on Monday, June 3, 2019, to go in procession to Union Cemetery for the 10:00 a.m. burial with military honors. Pallbearers will be Terry Hurst, David Gratz, Ben W. Hooper, III, Barry Valentine, Derrick Woods, and Bill Leibrock. Honorary pallbearers will be members of Union Cemetery Board of Directors, Bill Shults, Nathan Ford, Connie Ball and John Clark.
