Louie Smith Turner, age 96, of Knoxville passed away at Tennova Residential Hospice Facility of natural causes on February 7, 2017. She was born on November 19, 1920 in Cocke County, Tennessee to Arthur and Mary Smith. She is survived by daughters: Sarah Tucker and Mary Dunlap; grandchildren Renee Stempkowski, Russell Tucker, Chris Gregory, Lori Harris, SaraBeth Bentley and Kristi Swann; great grandchildren: Laila, Lexie and Bridget Stempkowski, Kaylee and Emma Tucker, Sydney Gregory, Amelia Baker, Sophia and Addilyn Bentley; and one sister Loiree Grigsby and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Len Turner. She was one of the founding families of the First Church of God in Del Rio. When she moved in 1989, she became an active participant at the First Church of God in Knoxville where she was highly respected and loved by the church family until her death in 2017. Her hobbies included reading, sewing and shopping. She obtained two graduate degrees from ETSU in Johnson City and over the years acquired additional certifications in various areas of education. Mrs. Turner spent almost forty years in the Cocke County Education System. She began her teaching career in a one teacher school and retired as Guidance Counselor at Cocke County High School. In addition, she taught sixth grade at Del Rio Elementary School, Math at Cocke County High School and at Walters' State in addition to Guidance Counselor at Cocke County High School where she helped many students find scholarships and grants insuring their ability to attend college. After retirement, Mrs. Turner assisted her daughter in a day care business as bookkeeper, a task she enjoyed well into her nineties. She was very involved with her great grandchildren and had a close loving relationship with them. Mrs. Turner was generous and loved the people of Del Rio and tried to look after them as though they were her family. She was always ready to lend a helping hand when needed. She will be greatly missed by her family and friends. The family will receive friends Thursday, February 9, 2017 from 5:00pm-7:00pm at Brown Funeral Home. Funeral service will follow at 7:00pm with Norm Patton officiating. Burial will take place in Union Cemetery at 11:00am Friday, February 10, 2017.
